Without properly fitted golf clubs, golfers may be forced to make changes to their set-up or golf swings to accommodate their clubs and may not play to the best of their abilities. In severe cases, poorly fitted equipment can cause recurring bad shots. In a lot of cases, better fitting equipment will complement individual characteristics and lead to consistently better shots.
Golf clubs displayed at golf shops are usually offered in mainstream options only. Adding to the confusion is a lack of standardization from manufacturer to manufacturer. Buying golf clubs off the rack, unless you know your exact requirements, is pretty much like buying shoes without trying them on.
The Cranbrook Golf Club offers golfers a proven method to take the guesswork out of buying golf clubs.
To end up with a set of clubs that fit, you need to have your swing characteristics analyzed and a type of solution identified. The Cranbrook Golf Club uses a state-of-the-art Launch Monitor to accuartely measure all your key swing characteristics. This information then directs the fitting process to a much narrower range of possibilities. Customers' preference for appearance and cost have to be considered which narrows possibilities further. The final stage is that of trial and error to positively identify a solution that is suitable and the customer is comfortable with.
The Cranbrook Golf Shop will work with you to analyze the nature of your swing and identify likely solutions. Most importantly, these possibilities can be readily tested at the Club’s full length driving range, and even field trialed under actual playing conditions.
A custom club fitting session at the Cranbrook Golf Club will cover the following 7 considerations that are very important when choosing a new golf club:
1. Shaft Length
Shaft length will impact where on the clubface the ball is consistently struck. The correct shaft length will prevent the golfer from having to alter a natural swing arc in order to make optimal impact.
2. Lie Angle
This is the angle formed by the shaft and sole of the club which plays a very important role in direction. Having a correct lie angle will cause the center of the soul of the clubhead to make contact with the ground at impact. If the toe of the clubhead is raised at impact and the heel makes contact with the ground this may result in a hooking or pulled shot. Should the heel be raised at impact and the toe of the golf club makes contact with the ground at impact a push or slice may result.
3. Shaft Flex
The shaft flex impacts trajectory, accuracy, distance and consistency. During the golf swing, the club flexes throughout until squarely meeting the ball at impact. An incorrect shaft flex significantly reduces the chance of making consistently solid contact and producing a good trajectory.
4. Shaft Type
Personal characteristics of a golfer plays a major role in choosing the correct shaft type. The composition of steel and graphite shafts, their kick points, swing weights and toque ratings are qualities in a shaft that must be considered when trying to obtain the best possible ball flight.
5. Grip Characteristics
The right grip size can impact the golfer’s ability to return the clubface to a square position and allow the hands ( wrists ) to release at the proper time in the golf swing. Also, with the variety of grip compositions, personal preference and playing conditions become a determining factor.
6. Clubhead Design
Choosing a clubhead design that best suits an individuals game is very important. Many individuals are using golf clubs that do not allow them to play their best golf. With increased Moment of Inertia (MOI) in golf clubs, this factor has become a major consideration, particularly with higher handicappers. When shots are struck off center, a high MOI reduces twisting at impact, delivering shots closer to the intended target.
7. Set Make-up
With new clubs on the market, like hybrids and alternate wedges, golfers have a much wider range of choice in clubs carried in their bag. Numerous lofts and designs in woods, hybrids, irons and wedges, along with manufacturers allowing golfers to purchase different matrixes, enables golfers to be much more creative when choosing their tools.
